6 weeks on...

It's now almost 6 weeks since the 1st 2 of Reuben's operations and he's doing amazingly well :) yesterday he went back to nursery for the first time since being in hospital and he's loving being part of everything again! They missed him and made him cards and presents while he wasn't there which was lovely. He's off all the medication and although some movement is limited or restricted, especially with the brace on to protect him, he does his best to run and jump all over the place even though he's not supposed to do that! But how do you stop a 3 year old from being a little energetic at times - very difficult but it's lovely that he's back on his feet and getting into a little mischief! Reuben has to wear his brace for most of the day to protect his back while the bone graft takes, he will have to wear it for a few months and then he should be able to do without it. He's been very good up to now and doesn't mind putting it on which is a relief, we were dreading having daily battles to get his to wear it but so far no problems :) Thankfully he has also avoided any nasty infections or coughs and colds over the past few weeks which we were told to avoid if possible as he had to have his lung deflated for the first operation and he's come through it all very well, he had the flu jab too a couple of weeks ago. Now we're gearing up for Christmas, new year, birthday and then preparation for when he starts school next September!

Esther didn't want to miss out on getting in on a photo, Reuben as always isn't bothered about posing for the camera! His brace is worn over his clothing unlike the cast which was against his skin and he can take it off at bathtime and for sleeping. Reuben loves looking at books and magazines :)

The difference is just incredible, I still can't believe how different he looks and what the surgeon has done to make his back straight, we never imagined it would be quite so straight! He's gone from being twisted and curved to looking tall and even, it's hard to even think about where all the metal is in his back but it's in there!

The card that Nursery made for Reuben, there are little messages underneath each of their hand prints with something they like about him :)
